Student Killed and Another Critically Wounded in Shooting at Kentucky State University
One student was killed and another critically wounded in a shooting at a residence hall at Kentucky State University on Tuesday. Authorities have arrested a suspect who is not a student at the university. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall and has been described as an "isolated incident," according to Scott Tracy, assi
stant chief of police for Frankfort. Police responded swiftly to the scene, and there are currently no active safety concerns on campus. Jacob Lee Bard, from Evansville, Indiana, approximately 150 miles west of Frankfort, was booked into jail on murder and first-degree assault charges. Officials have not publicly provided a motive for the shooting. The names of the students involved have not been released. One remains in critical condition but is stable, according to the university. The school stated it is working closely with the families and providing counseling and support services. Governor Andy Beshear confirmed via social media that the shooting "appears to be an isolated incident" and that there is "no ongoing threat." He urged residents to pray for the victims’ families and the KSU community. In response to the shooting, Kentucky State University has canceled classes, final exams, and campus activities for the remainder of the week. Students are allowed to return home if they wish, and further guidance will be provided. University President Koffi C. Akakpo called the incident a "senseless tragedy" and expressed his condolences to the families affected. This marks the second shooting in four months near the same residence hall. On August 17, shots fired from a vehicle struck two people near Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall. The victims were not students, and one sustained serious injuries. Kentucky State University, a historically Black public university founded in 1886, enrolls approximately 2,200 students. The campus is located about 2 miles east of the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort.
