China’s Guizhou Mountains Transform Into Giant Solar Power Hub
A remarkable new video has captured an entire mountain range in China’s Guizhou province covered in vast fields of solar panels — a breathtaking display of the country’s accelerating push toward renewable energy dominance. These steep, rugged mountains were once considered unusable for agriculture. Today, they stand transformed into one of the worl
d’s most visually striking clean-energy zones. Guizhou’s solar journey began modestly in 2015. By 2018, the region was already generating 1.75 million kilowatts of solar power annually. Then came a rapid surge, fueled by government subsidies, inexpensive land, and low-interest loans. By 2020, capacity had soared beyond 10 million kilowatts. In 2023, it climbed even higher — reaching 15 million kilowatts with expansion continuing at full pace. The growth in Guizhou mirrors a nationwide trend. As of 2024, China accounted for an astonishing 64% of all utility-scale solar and wind projects under construction worldwide, totaling 339 gigawatt hours. By comparison, the next four countries combined the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Spain were working on only 72 gigawatt hours. Despite coal still providing 57% of China’s electricity, its usage is declining faster than expected. At the current rate, China is on track to reach its major renewable-energy objectives well before 2030, moving steadily toward President Xi Jinping’s long-term target of carbon neutrality by 2060. Guizhou’s solar-coated mountain ranges are more than a striking visual they are a powerful symbol of how rapidly the global energy landscape is changing.
