Stockholm Mother Cleared of Suspicions in Alleged Imprisonment Case
Swedish prosecutors have dropped all charges against a 70-year-old woman previously accused of imprisoning her son for nearly 30 years inside their Stockholm-area apartment. Authorities now say there is no evidence the man was ever held against his will. The case gained international attention after the man — now around 40 — was discovered injure
d and living in squalid conditions inside the cluttered flat. His sister had entered the apartment on Sunday after learning their mother had been taken to hospital. She described finding the home dark, foul-smelling, and filled with piles of debris. Hearing a noise from the kitchen, she found her brother sitting in a corner, covered in sores up to his knees, missing most of his teeth, and speaking with a slurred voice. Despite his condition, doctors later confirmed his injuries were not caused by violence . Prosecutor Emma Olsson said investigators found no signs the man had been locked in, restrained, or physically prevented from leaving. “The man himself has said that it was up to him if he wanted to leave the apartment,” Olsson said. “He’s an adult and could go out if he wanted.” Witnesses also reported seeing him outside on occasion. The mother, who had been detained on suspicion of false imprisonment and causing bodily harm, has now been released. Social services have launched a separate inquiry into the family’s history, including claims the boy was removed from school around age 11 or 12 and kept socially isolated. “One can question her suitability as a mother, but this is now for social services to assess,” Olsson added. The man’s sister told Swedish broadcaster SVT that she had left the home as a teenager and had not seen her brother for years despite earlier efforts to raise concerns. Authorities say the investigation into the mother is now closed , though social welfare reviews will continue.
