Ten Dead After Shooting at Canadian High School and Nearby Home
The suspected shooter identified by police as an 18-year old local resident, died at the scene of the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said. Officers responding to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School found six people dead inside the school and a seven
th died while being transported to hospital, the RCMP said. Two additional bodies were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the attack. At this point in our investigation, we do not believe there are any outstanding suspects, RCMP officials said at a news briefing . Our thoughts are with the families and the community at this difficult time. Authorities said more than 25 people were injured including several with serious or life threatening wounds. Victims were treated at local medical facilities and some were airlifted to larger hospitals for further care. The attack unfolded in the early afternoon at the secondary school, which serves about 160 students in grades seven through 12 in the small community of roughly 2,400 residents. Police received the first call of an active shooter around 1:20 p.m. local time and arrived within minutes. Tumbler Ridge is a close knit town. This is a horrific tragedy, British Columbia Premier David Eby said in a statement . Schools in the area were placed on lockdown during the incident and will remain closed for the rest of the week while support services are mobilized. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences to the victims families and announced plans to lower the Canadian flag to half-mast as the nation mourns the loss of life. Mass shootings are uncommon in Canada compared with the United States, where such events are more frequent. The incident is one of the deadliest school shootings in the country’s recent history and is expected to renew debate over gun control and public safety.
