Erhurman speaks with UK’s Doughty on Cyprus problem
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman held a telephone call with the UK’s Minister of State for Europe, Stephen Doughty, during which they discussed recent developments in the Cyprus issue. The call followed Erhurman’s participation in a tripartite meeting last week with UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin and President Nikos Christodoulides, which Holgu
in described as a positive and constructive restart of dialogue after five years without face-to-face talks between the two leaders. This was Doughty’s first official contact with the Turkish Cypriot leadership since he hosted Erhurman’s predecessor, Ersin Tatar, at the UK parliament in June. That meeting preceded an enlarged Cyprus talks format in New York involving both sides, the three guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey and the UK), and the UN, raising hopes that a further, more substantive meeting could take place soon.
