Seven Killed as Private Jet Crashes During Take off in Maine Snowstorm
Seven people were killed and one seriously injured after a private jet crashed while taking off from Bangor International Airport in the US state of Maine, authorities said on Monday. The Bombardier Challenger 600, carrying eight people, went down at around 7:45pm local time on Sunday (00:45 GMT Monday), according to the Federal Aviation Adminis
tration (FAA) . The sole survivor was a member of the flight crew. In a brief statement, the FAA said the aircraft “ crashed under unknown circumstances on departure, ” adding that it came to rest inverted and caught fire. The crash remains under investigation and the identities of the victims have not yet been released. The incident occurred as a severe winter storm swept across large parts of the United States, causing hazardous travel conditions, power outages and multiple fatalities elsewhere. Bangor remains under a winter storm warning until Tuesday, with heavy snowfall continuing. Pilots had reportedly been struggling with poor visibility at Bangor airport prior to the crash. Audio recordings from air traffic control, published by LiveATC.net and reported by CBS News, captured discussions about reduced visibility shortly before the incident, though it was unclear which aircraft were involved. Moments later, a controller was heard saying there was “ a passenger aircraft upside down .” Bangor International Airport was temporarily closed following the crash, as emergency crews responded to the scene. Images showed smoke and flames on the runway. Public records indicate the aircraft was registered to a law firm based in Houston, Texas. The crash added to widespread disruption caused by the storm, with more than 11,000 flights cancelled and nearly 5,500 delayed nationwide on Sunday , according to FlightAware. Airports across the northeastern and mid-Atlantic US, including Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York and New Jersey, were among those affected. The National Weather Service said between 10 and 16 inches (25–40cm) of snow could accumulate in parts of Maine, including Bangor, by Tuesday morning. Source: CBS News
