No Shelter From the Cold: Gaza’s Winter Storms Bring Death Indoors
Heavy rainfall, strong winds and plunging temperatures have battered the densely populated enclave, causing the collapse of buildings already weakened by months of conflict. Local civil defence officials said at least several people were killed when damaged homes gave way under the pressure of the storm, while others have died from exposure to extr
eme cold. Across Gaza, families sheltering in makeshift tents and partially destroyed structures have been left with little protection from the weather. Tents have flooded or collapsed, forcing residents to seek refuge in unsafe buildings that offer minimal insulation and, in many cases, structural stability. Emergency responders described dire conditions, particularly in displacement camps, where basic necessities such as blankets, heating and dry shelter are scarce. Children, the elderly and the sick are among the most vulnerable, with health workers warning that hypothermia poses a growing threat as winter conditions persist. The storm has compounded an already severe humanitarian situation. Years of blockade and repeated rounds of violence have left Gaza with widespread housing damage and limited access to construction materials, making repairs difficult or impossible. Aid agencies have warned that without urgent assistance, more lives could be lost as harsh weather continues. For many residents, the storm has underscored a grim reality: there is no safe place to go. As one civil defence official put it, Gaza’s civilians are caught between freezing temperatures outside and collapsing structures inside — with no true shelter from the cold. Source: Al Jazeera
