Portugal Intercepts Record Cocaine Haul from ‘Narco-Sub’ off Azores
The high-profile operation was carried out by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in coordination with the Portuguese Navy and Air Force with support from international partners including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the UK National Crime Agency (NCA). Officials described the mission as a major blow to transatlantic drug trafficking n
etworks supplying the European market. The vessel, commonly known as a “narco-sub,” was detected approximately 230 nautical miles south of the Azores. Designed to evade radar and surveillance, semi-submersibles are increasingly used by organized crime groups to transport large quantities of narcotics from Latin America to Europe. Massive Haul, Historic Impact Authorities recovered around 265 bales of cocaine, with an estimated total weight close to nine tonnes. During the interception, part of the cargo and the vessel itself sank but officials confirmed that the recovered quantity alone is sufficient to make this seizure the largest in Portugal’s history. Law enforcement sources estimate the drugs’ street value to be hundreds of millions of euros, underscoring the scale of the criminal operation and its potential impact on European drug markets. Arrests and Charges All four crew members on board reported to be South American nationals were rescued at sea and taken into custody. Portuguese judicial authorities have ordered preventive detention, with suspects facing charges of aggravated drug trafficking and participation in an international criminal organization. Strategic Role in the Atlantic Portuguese officials emphasized the country’s growing role in maritime security due to its strategic position along major Atlantic trafficking routes. In recent years, Portugal has increased surveillance and international cooperation to counter the use of advanced smuggling methods including semi-submersible vessels. “This operation reflects the effectiveness of intelligence led policing and international collaboration,” a PJ spokesperson said — noting that investigations are ongoing to identify the wider criminal network behind the shipment. Ongoing Investigation Authorities are continuing to analyze seized materials and intelligence to trace the origin, financing and intended destination of the cocaine. Further arrests are not ruled out as the investigation expands across multiple jurisdictions. The seizure marks a significant milestone in Portugal’s fight against organized crime and reinforces its position as a key partner in global counter-narcotics efforts.
