Northern European Nations Pledge Major Wind Power Expansion
Energy ministers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands said they would increase offshore and onshore wind capacity by 40% over the next decade with combined investments exceeding €50 billion. The initiative is being described as one of the largest coordinated renewable energy efforts in Europe. “Wind energy is central to our vi
sion of a sustainable and secure energy future,” said Mette Frederiksen(Denmark’s Prime Minister.) By working together, Northern European nations can lead the way in renewable energy innovation. The expansion comes amid growing concerns over energy security following geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and the urgency of meeting climate targets outlined in the European Green Deal. Officials said the plan would help lower carbon emissions, stabilize energy prices and create thousands of jobs across the region. The joint strategy includes: • Offshore wind farms along the North Sea and Baltic coasts, aiming to add 25 GW of capacity by 2035. • Onshore wind projects in areas with strong wind potential. • Cross-border energy grids to improve efficiency and energy sharing. • Funding for innovation in turbine technology, battery storage, and grid integration. Experts said Northern Europe’s geography, with long coastlines and consistent wind patterns, gives it a strategic advantage in wind energy production. Environmental groups welcomed the expansion but urged careful planning to protect local ecosystems and fishing communities. Construction on the first phase is expected to begin in late 2026, with full implementation targeted for 2035. Officials said the initiative demonstrates the potential of regional cooperation to deliver large-scale renewable energy solutions while supporting economic growth and energy security.
