German Chancellor Merz: “No Peace Deal Without Ukraine’s Consent”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has firmly stated that the ongoing war in Ukraine cannot be ended without Kyiv’s full consent, rejecting any attempt by major powers to impose a settlement over the heads of those under attack. Speaking to reporters, Merz emphasized that Europe must play a central role in shaping any future peace agreement, warning
that a Ukrainian defeat would trigger severe instability across the European continent. The Chancellor also revealed that he delivered a direct message to former U.S. President Donald Trump, reminding him that previous Russian commitments—most notably the Budapest Memorandum—were violated. Merz stressed that new, stronger security guarantees are now essential to prevent further breaches and ensure long-term stability in the region.
