Senior Russian Military Intelligence Official Shot in Moscow
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, deputy head of Russia’s Main Directorate of the General Staff, commonly known as the GRU was shot multiple times by an unidentified assailant outside his apartment building in the northwest of the city. He was rushed to a hospital and remains in serious condition, according to reports. The shooting took place
in a residential area on Volokolamskoye Highway, where the gunman is reported to have fled immediately after the attack. Russian investigators have opened a criminal case on charges of attempted murder and are examining CCTV footage while interviewing witnesses. Alekseyev, 64 , has held a senior leadership role in Russian military intelligence for more than a decade and was involved in high-profile operations including the planning of military actions in Ukraine. He has been sanctioned by the United States and European Union over alleged involvement in foreign cyber activities and other covert operations. The Kremlin has publicly condemned the attack. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov blamed Ukraine for the incident, characterizing it as a deliberate attempt to disrupt diplomatic efforts. Although no evidence has been presented to support that claim and Kyiv has denied responsibility. The shooting adds to a series of violent incidents targeting senior Russian military figures since the start of the war in Ukraine, raising questions about security for high-ranking officials.
