Election Hopeful Osman Hadi Shot in Bijoynagar — Critical in ICU
Osman Hadi (Sharif Osman bin Hadi), an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and a leading member of Inquilab Mancha , was shot and critically injured in a targeted attack in the capital’s Bijoynagar area shortly after Jummah prayers. Witnesses say multiple assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire before speeding away.
The attack occurred around 2:25 pm near Box Culvert Road, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Hadi was struck near his left ear , sustaining a severe gunshot wound. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital , where doctors confirmed he had lost significant blood and is now in critical condition in the ICU. Police say three motorcycles were used in the attack. “It is not immediately clear who carried out the shooting or why,” said Motijheel Division DC Mohammad Harun Or Rashid. “We are working to identify those involved.” According to his associates, Hadi had planned to distribute election leaflets after Jummah prayers and later join supporters at Suhrawardy Udyan when the shooting occurred. Following the attack, supporters urgently appealed for B-negative blood , and a large crowd gathered at DMCH’s emergency unit. Earlier in the day, Hadi wrote on Facebook that he had no posters or banners in Dhaka-8, joking that he didn’t face the usual pressure of having them torn down. Dhaka-8 is a major political battleground covering Motijheel, Paltan, Shahjahanpur, Ramna and Shahbagh. Candidates include BNP’s Mirza Abbas , Jamaat’s Helal Uddin , and Revolutionary Workers’ Party’s Saiful Haque . Hadi rose to prominence during last year’s July Uprising and helped form the political-cultural platform Inquilab Mancha , which says it works against domination and for a just and sovereign state.
