Denmark to Allow Up to ~500,000 Foreign Residents to Vote in 2025 Local Elections
Ahead of the municipal and regional elections in Denmark on 18 November 2025, up to half a million foreign nationals will have the right to vote, making this the highest number ever eligible in Danish history. Under Danish election law: Citizens of another EU member state, plus Iceland, Norway and the UK, who are legally resident in Denmark can v
ote immediately in local and regional elections. Non‑EU citizens may vote if they have been legally resident in Denmark for at least four years prior to election day. The opportunity to vote gives foreign residents a say in local issues such as transport, schools, healthcare and social services — areas traditionally handled at municipal and regional level.
