Driver Released After Deadly Stockholm Bus Crash That Killed Three
Swedish authorities have released a bus driver who was arrested after a horrific crash in central Stockholm left three people dead and three others injured. The investigation into the incident, which unfolded on Valhallavägen near the Royal Institute of Technology, remains ongoing. The Swedish Prosecution Authority said there was “no reason” to kee
p the driver in custody after questioning, though several investigative steps are still pending. The man had initially been detained on suspicion of causing three deaths and three injuries, but police have found no indication that the crash was intentional. The double-decker bus, which was out of service and carrying no passengers, ploughed into a queue at a bus stop around 15:23 local time. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, with images showing responders attempting to reach people trapped beneath the vehicle. Witnesses described scenes of panic and devastation. One shop owner said the bus struck a pole before crashing into the shelter, prompting several people to flee into nearby stores in tears. A woman who spoke to Expressen said the vehicle “mowed down an entire bus stop queue”, with injured victims screaming for help as others lay motionless on the ground. Authorities are still working to identify the victims. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed condolences, saying his thoughts were with those who “might have been on their way home to family, friends, or a quiet evening”. He added that the cause of the crash remains unclear as investigators continue their work.
