Bolsonaro Blames “Hallucinations” From Medication After Tampering With Ankle Tag
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has claimed that hallucinatory side effects from a recent medication change caused him to tamper with his court-mandated ankle monitoring device, triggering his arrest over the weekend. Bolsonaro, who is already convicted of attempting a military coup following his 2022 election defeat, appeared before a Su
preme Court judge on Sunday after authorities detained him for allegedly using a soldering iron to interfere with the electronic tag. According to Assistant Judge Luciana Sorrentino, the former president said he experienced “paranoia” and feared the device contained a wiretap. Court documents state that Bolsonaro admitted he tampered with the bracelet “around midnight” before “coming to his senses” and alerting the officers supervising his house arrest. Bolsonaro had been serving his sentence under house arrest while appealing his 27-year prison term for orchestrating a failed coup to remain in power after losing to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Police reported the violation of the ankle monitor early Saturday, prompting Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to order his immediate detention on the grounds that he may attempt to flee. During Sunday’s procedural hearing, Bolsonaro’s lawyers argued he should continue serving his sentence at home due to health concerns. Justice de Moraes has previously denied similar requests, and the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the pre-emptive arrest order on Monday. Speaking from the G20 summit in South Africa, President Lula addressed the situation for the first time, saying simply: “The court ruled, that’s decided. Everyone knows what he did.” Bolsonaro maintains that a combination of medications prescribed by different doctors contributed to the incident, saying he began one new treatment only days before his arrest.
