Spain Boycotts Eurovision 2026 After Israel Confirmed to Participate
Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE announced on Thursday that the country will withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest , following the European Broadcasting Union’s decision to allow Israel to compete in the event. In a brief statement, RTVE said the broadcaster “cannot in good conscience participate in a cultural competition that includes
a nation currently under intense international scrutiny.” The announcement marks the first major boycott ahead of Eurovision 2026, which is scheduled to take place next spring. The decision comes amid weeks of debate within Spain about whether to send an entry to the contest. Several political groups, cultural organizations, and artists had urged RTVE to take a stand, arguing that Israel’s participation contradicts the spirit of unity and cultural neutrality the competition claims to promote. Eurovision’s organizers, however, have insisted that the event remain “apolitical,” maintaining that all qualified member broadcasters have the right to participate regardless of geopolitical tensions. Spain’s withdrawal means the country one of Eurovision’s longest-running participants will not take part for the first time in decades. RTVE also confirmed that it will not broadcast the contest domestically. Further reactions from European broadcasters are expected in the coming days, as discussions continue across the continent about the implications of Israel’s inclusion in the 2026 lineup.
