Sudan Army Retakes Two Areas in North Kordofan as RSF Burns More Bodies in El-Fasher
Sudan’s army says it has recaptured two strategic areas in North Kordofan, as new satellite evidence shows the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continuing to burn and bury bodies in el-Fasher to hide evidence of mass killings. Video posted on social media this week shows Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) fighters celebrating with rifles and rocket-propelled gr
enades after retaking Kazqil and Um Dam Haj Ahmed , towns where heavy clashes are expected to continue in the coming days. The gains come as the civil war enters its third year, with the RSF tightening its grip on western Sudan and pushing further east. The conflict has triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis, according to the United Nations, with more than 12 million people uprooted and widespread reports of famine. RSF accused of concealing atrocities Despite claiming to accept a US-backed ceasefire last week, the RSF has continued operations across Darfur and Kordofan. In el-Fasher, where hundreds of civilians were killed last month, new evidence indicates that the group is attempting to cover up mass killings. Satellite images released Friday by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab identify four new sites where RSF fighters appear to be disposing of bodies: University of Alfashir A structure on the edge of Abu Shouk displacement camp A neighbourhood near al-Hikma Mosque Saudi Hospital , the site of a reported mass killing Researchers say the images show burn marks, disturbed ground and vehicle tracks consistent with body disposal. The number of victims remains unknown, but rights groups warn that thousands of residents from el-Fasher are still unaccounted for. Ceasefire prospects dim The RSF announced last week it had accepted a ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States and regional mediators. But the army has rejected any agreement that freezes troops in their current positions, and both sides continue to deploy reinforcements. The RSF seized the town of Bara in North Kordofan late last month, only two months after the army had retaken the area, underscoring the fluid and volatile nature of the front lines. As the conflict expands into central Sudan, humanitarian agencies warn that the situation is deteriorating rapidly, with starvation confirmed in several regions and access to aid severely restricted.
