Portugal Conducts 2,228 Foreign National Inspections in Three Days
The operation conducted between Nov. 26 and Nov. 29, 2025, brought together multiple law enforcement agencies and state entities working in coordination to monitor both individuals and infrastructure. Authorities also inspected 4,978 people, more than 1,550 vehicles, nine vessels, and 195 establishments during the period. Of the foreign nationals i
nspected, 30 were found to be in the country without legal status, according to SSI figures. The nationalities of those individuals were not disclosed. In addition to immigration checks, law enforcement made 25 arrests, over half of which were related to traffic offenses, including driving under the influence, and 24 crimes were formally registered, mostly linked to traffic violations. This operation is the second iteration of “Portugal Sempre Seguro” this year. Its stated goals include strengthening public safety, preventing illegal activity, and enforcing compliance in nightlife venues and restaurants. Some political commentators have raised concerns that enforcement actions during the operation could appear focused on undocumented immigrants, highlighting ongoing debates about proportionality and civil liberties. Following the 2023 dissolution of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), immigration and border oversight now falls under the Public Security Police (PSP) and its specialised units. Recent reforms, including a newly approved regime for returning foreign nationals found illegally in Portugal, aim to balance enforcement with human rights and streamline procedures.
